There have also been reports of isolated suspected cases of allergic reactions in connection with the oral intake of products containing propolis, e.g. in the form of tablets, drops or oral forms for sucking (Hay and Greig, 1990; Menniti-Ippolito et al., 2008). The ingredients caffeic acid 3-methyl-2-butenyl ester, caffeic acid 2-methyl-2-butenyl ester, caffeic acid 3-methyl-3-butenyl ester, caffeic acid phenyl ethyl ester and benzyl cinnamate and benzyl salicylate can be classified as allergenic (Walgrave et al., 2005). More than 200 different substances have been identified in propo- lis, with differences in composition depending on the geographical origin (Marcucci, 1995; Bankova et al., 2000; Bankova, 2005).
